The cooling process is such that the low-pressure refrigerant in the evaporator exchanges heat with water and takes the heat of the water and turns into steam. Then the gas refrigerant goes to the compressor, where it condenses during a process, and its pressure and temperature increase. In the next step, the refrigerant vapor is transferred to the air condenser and through the walls of the condenser coils, it is in indirect contact with the outside air and transfers heat. The fans on the top of the condenser speed up the air circulation around the coils and make the cooling process faster and better. During the transfer of heat from the refrigerant to the outside air, the vapor of the refrigerant changes phase to liquid. After leaving the condenser, the refrigerant enters the expansion valve and in a constant enthalpy process, it expands and its temperature and pressure decrease. At this stage, due to the high pressure drop of the refrigerant, some of the refrigerant liquid evaporates, which causes a further decrease in the temperature of the refrigerant. Then the two-phase refrigerant returns to the evaporator to cool the water. The cooled water in the evaporator is transferred to the fan coils and the size of the equipment inside the building and performs the air cooling operation.

In addition to being widely used in residential, commercial and office buildings, air-cooled compression chillers are also widely used in industry. The difference between these two types of chillers is based on the type of cooling of the refrigerant inside the refrigeration cycle or, in fact, the condenser model. In the air-cooled compression chiller, the refrigerant that has taken the heat of the water is liquefied in the air condenser by the air blown by the fans, but in the water-cooled compression chiller, the condenser is a shell and tube type and the heat of the refrigerant is absorbed by the water. Then this water is sent to the cooling tower with the help of a pump, where the temperature of the water is reduced and the water returns to the shell and tube condenser.

Advantages of air-cooled chiller over water-cooled

  • Low maintenance cost: One of the components that need maintenance in air-conditioned chillers is the condenser coils, which must be cleaned. That is, if the condenser is in a polluted environment with a lot of dust, in which case, the accumulation of pollution reduces the efficiency of the device.
  • No water consumption: In the water-cooled compression chiller, due to the cooling of the water in the tower, with the help of direct contact of water with air, some of the water is evaporated and we need to supply water with deduction. Therefore, in areas where there is a water supply problem, the water cooled model is not recommended, but the air chiller is not a problem.
  • Can be used in all types of weather: The air-cooled chiller can be used in all types of climates. For example, in hot and humid areas, the air-cooled compression chiller has the best efficiency, while the water-cooled chiller has no good efficiency in these areas due to the type of cooling mechanism and the use of a cooling tower.
  • Lower start-up cost: In the water-cooled compression chiller, other equipment is needed, including a cooling tower, a hardening device, a water pump, and other connections. For this reason, the cost of setting up a water-cooled chiller is higher than that of an air-cooled chiller.
  • Ability to install in open space: all air-cooled chiller equipment is installed on the roof or building area and therefore does not occupy the space of engine houses.

Disadvantages of air cooled compression chiller compared to water cooled

  • Lower cooling efficiency: the enthalpy of the refrigerant leaving the condenser of the air-cooled chiller is different from the enthalpy of the refrigerant leaving the water-cooled chiller. For this reason, after the expansion valve, the quality of the air-cooled chiller’s refrigerant drops drastically, which results in lower cooling efficiency.
  • Higher electricity consumption: In the air-cooled compression chiller, it is necessary that the refrigerant output from the compressor be placed at a higher pressure. As a result, the compressor of these chillers has more work and, as a result, more electricity consumption.
  • More noise and vibration: At certain capacities, the air-cooled compression chiller needs a larger compressor. On the other hand, in the condenser of this model, we need a fan in order to circulate more air. Both factors increase the sound and vibration of the set.
  • The need for free space for installation: the air-cooled chiller must be installed in an open space with free air flow so that there is enough air to cool the refrigerant around the condenser. Therefore, it is not possible to install these chillers next to the wall or under the ceiling. Because of the vibration and sound, you should think about arrangements before installing it on site. For example, if it needs to be installed on the roof, the effect of its weight and vibration should be considered in the calculations of the building structure and skeleton. In these cases, it is better to use chassis and shock absorbers at the installation site.
  • Larger dimensions: due to the efficiency of using an air condenser, compared to other chillers, to achieve a specific refrigeration capacity, a chiller with larger dimensions and more capacity should be used.

A fan coil can be used for internal cooling in addition to an air-cooled compression chiller. The advantages of using these two together are:

  • Connecting the chiller to the fan coil and water flow does not require expensive connections and does not impose a lot of cost on the project.
  • Due to the use of fan coils in each space, it is possible to adjust the comfortable temperature in each space independently from the other space, and if there is no need for cooling in one space, the fan coil can be turned off. Therefore, it will have a more efficient consumption of electricity.
  • The cold water inside the coils in the fan dehumidifies the air and makes the indoor air more pleasant.
